A Logodaedalist's Dream, A Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobe's Nightmare...
I have always loved words - I love to take them apart and make new words, explore etymology, learn different languages, discover what connotations
different words have for me...so of course it follows that I LOVE to read!
When I was a kid, I was mostly interested in fictional works. This changed at some point during my adolesence, and I grew to prefer biographies, poetry, plays, and a range of non-fictional subjects. In the last few years, however, I've begun to enjoy reading fiction again, and now non-fiction and fiction are pretty much equally appealing to me.
Of course, over the years, I've grown fond of a variety of authors. I was delighted to learn, during my teen years, that I share a birthday with two of my all-time favorites (Madeleine L'Engle and C.S. Lewis, as well as Louisa May Alcott; the day in question would be Nov. 29). Below I've compiled a list of links to websites about a few of my favorites through the years, as well as a couple of links to the websites of a few periodicals I read on a regular basis and a few other word-related links...
These Are a Few of My Favorite Authors...
Dr. Seuss: One of my first favorites, and still one today.
Beverly Cleary: One of my three favorite authors back in my elementary school days.
Carolyn Haywood: I loved the Betsy & Billy books...
Judy Blume: Yes, I was one of the millions or pre-teen and teenage girl fans of Ms. Blume.
Shel Silverstein: Another childhood favorite that has stuck with me into adulthood.
Madeleine L'Engle: her official site
C.S. Lewis: I may even be distantly related to this one, but I've never been able to verify that.
Shakespeare: Of course!
Emily Dickinson: One of my favorite poets
Robert Frost: Another one of my favorite poets
Barbara Delinsky: One of the authors whose fiction works I've come to love in the last few years.
Jodi Picoult: Another recent favorite in the fiction column.
Anne Lamott: It's her non-fiction I like best (especially Operating Instructions), but her fiction's good, too.
Barbara Kingsolver: Much like Ms. Lamott, her essays make me think, and her fiction isn't bad either.
J.K. Rowling: Harry Potter. [Nothing more needs to be said.]
Jacqueline Mitchard: Yet another recent favorite, for both her fiction and nonfiction writing.
The Periodical Table of Elements
Readers Digest - My all-time favorite monthly magazine
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - My hometown newspaper
The Asheville Citizen-Times - The news from the city I live in now...the city my heart calls home.
Fun With Words
Dictionary.com: Your handy one-stop source for spellings, definitions, synonyms, word games, and more...
By the way: a logodaedalist is someone who plays with words, and a hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobe is someone with a fear of long words (delicious irony, that last one...)
I'm currently mining the 'net for other links to put here. Be patient...and until
then, go back to my main page.
